Getting started with mobile casino gaming

If you're new to mobile gaming things can sometimes get a little confusing as there as so many different and competing Operating Systems, manufacturers and devices out there so on this page we have written a handy guide for anyone wanting to play casino games on their smartphones or tablets.

The information on this page is based on the Online Slots 4U's teams knowledge and experiences of playing slots games on our mobiles and on other pages we take a more indepth look at iPhone Casinos and Android Casinos and we also have a page about Mobile Casino Software where we take a look at some of the main developers in the mobile casino gaming market today.

Mobile Casino Requirements

So what exactly do you need to play at mobile casinos? Well the two main ways of accessing a mobile casino and playing their games nowadays are via smartphones such as the latest generation of Android powered phones and Apple iPhones and tablets such as the iPad. Older, less sophisticated web enabled phones - known as WAP phones - can also be used to access many casinos and there is also the possibility of using PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) also known as palmtop computers although the line between a palmtop computer and mobile phone has really blurred over the past few years with the arrival of ever more powerful smartphones.

Typically, the list of phones mobile casinos support is huge and will include support for best selling phones from the big manufactures such as HTC, Samsung, Nokia, Acer, Sony Ericsson, Motorola etc - it's unlikely your phone isn't supported as long as it is not too old a device to be capable, and meets the minimum requirements.

You will, of course, require some kind of internet connection to access mobile casinos and download games and the ever increasing uptake of home and office based broadband internet connections and wifi availability and satelite coverage means that for an ever increasing number of people instant access to the internet is available 24/7. If you've got internet connection and a suitable device then you're good to go. When you visit a mobile casino you'll need to register an account and typically you'll be given the option to either download an app to your phone and/or download individual games. The process only takes a few minute so you should be playing slots on your phone within seconds.

Android Phones: Android phones have become a huge success with consumers in the last couple of years thanks to the feature packed OS, large number of third party apps and desirable phones from manufacturers such as Samsung, HTC, LG and others. Android is Developed by the Open Handset Alliance which is led by Google and is a serious rival to Apple's iOS with, currently, well over 300 million Android devices in use today and a 59% smartphone market share worldwide.

Android Tablets: Android isn't only found on phones - manufacturers such as ASUS and Motorola use Android as the OS on their popular tablets such as the ASUS Transformer range and the popular Xoom tablets from Motorola. There's a real battle between Android tablets and the iPads from Apple and only time will tell who will emerge victorious. Playing slots games on Android tablets is an reliable alternative to the smaller screens of the smartphones and the bigger, bulkier traditional desktop/tower PCs.

Apps for Android devices can be downloaded from the App Store known as Google Play (previously known as Android Market) and also third party websites - there are over 500,000 apps available to choose from and it's estimated that more than 10 billion apps had been downloaded by the end of 2011.

Apple iPhones: Launched back in 2007, Apple's iPhones have enjoyed global success with and these phones remain, for many, the most desirable of the touch screen phones. Five generations of iPhone models now exist and each iPhone was accompanied by one of the five major releases of the iOS. The iPhone 4 is the latest iPhone superseding the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS

iPads and Tablets: The iPad has been another massive success for Apple and Apple can take credit for kick starting the demand for tablets. March 2012 saw the release of the iPad 3 which was in great demand with consumers despite, in reality, not being a revolutionary update to the best selling iPad 2.

Launched in 2008 the App Store is the place to download Apps for iPhone and with more than 500,000 available there's something for everyone. Apps must meet Apple's strict criteria before they can be made available to the public.

BlackBerry: The first of Research in Motion's BlackBerry phones was released in 1999 and Blackberries proved popular devices with consumers thanks largely to their secure email and instant messaging capabilities. BlackBerry remain a major player in the mobile device and smartphone market despite losing ground to Apple and Android in recent years.

Autumn 2011 saw the latest Blackberry 7 devices announced and the release of the popular BlackBerry Bold series and BlackBerry Porsche series, amongst others while 2012 saw the release of the Playbook 2.0 OS which has proven to be a big hit with the critics. Determined to fight back against rivals and regain market share, BlackBerry is undergoing a major restructuring and the release of BlackBerry 10 OS in late 2012 which brings new features including HTLM5 support to BlackBerry devices is eagerly awaited by fans and industry alike.

BlackBerry devices are more than capable of running the casino games on offer at mobile casinos so wether you're the owner of the latest BlackBrry series 7 device or older BlackBerry 6 devices such as the BlackBerry Curve and Torch and BlackBerry 5 such as the Storm and Tour or earlier BlackBerry models you will certainly find that most, if not all, of the mobile casinos who support Android and iOS will be supporting BlackBerry.

BlackBerry Apps: Launched on April 1st 2009, App World is BlackBerry app store and lets BlackBerry owners browse and download third-party applications.

Windows Phones: On October 11, 2010, Microsoft announced 10 devices operating Windows Phone, made by HTC, Dell, Samsung and on February 11, 2011 Microsoft and Nokia announced a partnership between their companies in which Windows Phone would become the primary smartphone operating system for Nokia. Microsoft are determined to gain market share in the mobile market and while they currently trail behind Android and iOS it is almost a certainty that Windows phones will become a major force in the mobile market.

Windows 7 phones are becoming popular with consumers and critic (though nowhere near as successful as Android or iPhones in terms of market share). Using Internet Explorer Mobile (IE Mobile) users can browse the web and download/purchase apps. From Windows 7.5 onwards Internet Explorer Mobile is based on the Internet Explorer 9 engine.

Likely in the later part of 2012 Microsoft's biggest upgrade of the Windows Phone operating system is going to be released, code named Apollo and likely to be called Windows Phone 8, 2013 might just be the year of the Windows Phone and Microsoft has just announce their iPad rival tablets called Surface as well and it remains to be seen how well they'll do against the iPad.

Windows Phone apps can be purchased from the Windows Phone Marketplace. Currently there are about 100,000 apps available which is less than the number of apps available for Android and iOS.

Good mobile casinos support Windows Phones so if you're the owner of a Nokia Lumia 800 or 900, for example, you will not have any problems playing slots and casino games on your phone.

While we're not quite ready to ship our main PCs to the recycling centre just yet , we have been playing mobile casino games on our phones for several years now and we're pretty confident that this sector of the casino industry is set to explode in popularity as an ever bigger and better range of casino games becomes available to play.

Thanks to advances in technology playing casino games on mobile phones and other portable devices such as iPads and BlackBerry Playbooks is now a reality and with the main casino software developers working hard to bring their games to a bigger audience we are confident that in the near future there will be an explosion in the number of casinos tempting players to play a huge range of games on their portable devices - perhaps it only a matter of time until all new slots games are released in both a traditional download/play online PC based format and an identical play anywhere, anytime mobile game format simultaneously.
